Question:
“Is it ok to plant crinums in only sand and let the roots grow into a second medium to help them from being waterlogged during winter?” -Michael J.

Response:
Hello, Michael.

Thanks for writing in. Yes, it is OK to plant crinums in only sand and let the roots grow into a second medium to help them from being waterlogged during winter. Be sure not to leave much of the crinum neck planted above the sand, because the crinum could be killed by heat-stroke. It’s also a good idea to put 2 inches of mulch over the sand to protect the crinum from intense heat exposure.

Hope this helps!
Michael H.
