The Narcissus bulbocodium ‘Oxford Gold’ (Hoop Petticoat) is loved for its unique shape. The ‘Oxford Gold’ is a little bit larger flower than the heirloom ‘Hoop Petticoat’ and a little more durable for the colder zones.
Blooms
The bloom looks like an antebellum hoop petticoat. The cup is large and bell shaped and often faces down with the top of the bloom narrowing into what would be compared to the waist of an antebellum dress. The petals are narrow and pointed radiating from the base of the bloom. The Narcissus bulbocodium is a native of the Mediterranean, where it was found in gritty soils. It is a favorite bulb amongst rock garden societies because of its delicate form, beautiful flowers, and ability to grow in the rocky soils. This flower only gets about 4–8″ tall so it is perfect for the front of your garden or in pots.
Planting
Plant the bulb like most daffodils in 6+ hours of winter sun, well-drained soil, avoid standing water, and avoiding too much competition. Plant the bulbs about 2–3 times the size of the bulb. Space the holes about 3–6 inches apart, and for a more natural looking display, consider planting 2–3 bulbs in each hole.
Landscaping Tip
Narcissus bloom at different times so as one daffodil is ending its bloom time another is just beginning. We like to say that “there is a bulb that blooms every week of the year in warmer climates.” Your garden can have consistent flowers from February through April.
Fragrance
This Narcissus has a light, sweet fragrance that adds an extra dimension of beauty and attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies.
