Today we divided and replanted our white rain lilies. I used to have the hardest time growing them in my rows. They would always die out on me. Ironically, it wasn’t until I went to a garden writer’s conference in Philadelphia that I learned something about Southern bulbs. At Longwood Gardens I noticed they had “our” white rain lilies growing in pots completely submerged in water at their bog garden demonstration. It hit me of course, that all the sites where I had found white rain lilies were very wet sites. Also, these bulbs are known for growing along riverbanks in South America. Knowing all of that, and with that epiphany at Longwood, I started planting the bulbs at the edge of one of our retention ponds. These photos are from our planting today. The bulbs absolutely love the water!
