A Major Showstopper
Hymenocallis Super Star is a major showstopper — combining towering height, huge blooms, and glossy foliage. It is garden-worthy and container-friendly. Similar to the Tropical Giant, the Super Star grows three to four feet tall with summer white, spidery blooms that measure almost one foot from tip to tip!
Foliage
The foliage of the Super Star is what truly sets it apart from other Hymenocallis. It is glossier, darker, and wider than the more familiar Tropical Giant. The broad, strap-like leaves create a lush, tropical look in the garden even before the blooms appear. The foliage alone makes a bold architectural statement, reaching about three and a half feet tall with a rich, deep green color that catches the light beautifully.
The Bloom
When the Super Star blooms, it commands attention. Each flower stalk rises above the glossy foliage and opens into enormous white, spidery blooms that can measure nearly a foot across. The intricate structure of the bloom — with its delicate, elongated petals radiating from a central cup — is one of the most elegant forms in the garden. These are summer bloomers that thrive in the heat, putting on their show when many other plants are struggling.
Planting and Care
The Super Star does best in moist soils, but it performs wonderfully in containers that are watered every couple of days. It loves the hot, humid Southern summers. These plants need at least eight hours a day of sun, but they perform best in full sun. Give them plenty of water and warmth, and they will reward you with a spectacular display.
When planting, give each bulb enough room to spread — about twelve to eighteen inches apart. In containers, use a rich, well-draining potting mix and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. These are vigorous growers that will fill out beautifully in a single season.
Container Growing
