The Narcissus ‘Rip Van Winkle’ bulb is probably the most unique daffodil bloom ever. This large bulb (12+ cm) produces a petite, 8–10 inch, yellow narcissus. The “petals” of the daffodil burst forth in every direction like a dandelion of your childhood days or the outer layers of a yellow chrysanthemum. This bulb has been around since 1884 (it is a naturally occurring species with recordings back to 1884) which shows its dependability.
Blooms
The Narcissus ‘Rip Van Winkle’ will adorn your April garden with its fun blooms. The bright yellow “petals” stick out in every direction to create a fun and unique bloom. Each bloom looks as if the sun has opened up to greet you. Because these are smaller they do great as borders, fillers in pots, or tucked into rock gardens. The blooms have a lovely fresh fragrance.
Planting
Plant the bulb like most daffodils in 6+ hours of winter sun, well-drained soil, avoid standing water, and avoiding too much competition. Plant the bulbs about 2–3 times the size of the bulb. Space the holes about 3–6 inches apart, and for a more natural looking display, consider planting 2–3 bulbs in each hole.
Landscaping Tip
Narcissus bloom at different times so as one daffodil is ending its bloom time another is just beginning. We like to say that “there is a bulb that blooms every week of the year in warmer climates.” Your garden can have consistent flowers from February through April.
